Nursing: Research Tips

Types of Sources

Research articles - present findings of specific studies or experiments; usually contain charts and data

Case studies - present data and narratives on specific patients/types of patients

Evidence-based articles - present research-supported practices for nursing care

Continuing Education (CE) articles - intended to keep nursing professionals current with evidence-based practices; may contain quizzes at the end to check the learning of information

Articles should....

  • Come from a recognized nursing.medical journal
  • Originate from the United States unless your instructor has indicated that it's acceptable to have sources from other countries
  • Contain current information (typically not older than 5 years, unless instructor states otherwise)
  • Not be an editorial or a review (unless it's part of the assignment)
  • Match the type of source required by your instructor's syllabi/assignment prompt
